NRI passport, visa and tax reminder checklist

Indians abroad often manage documents, India tax dates, bank deposits, property work and family money from different countries without a single system keeping track. Missing one renewal or deadline can mean a fine, a lapsed benefit or an emergency trip to sort out what a reminder would have prevented.
Documents to track
Indian passport validity should be checked at least 9 months before expiry, because many countries require a minimum remaining validity for entry and residence permit renewal. Passport and visa or residence permit expiry are separate — a valid passport does not mean a valid right to remain in your country of residence. Track the I-94 record in the USA, employment pass in Singapore, Iqama in Saudi Arabia, or relevant permit for your country independently.
India tax deadlines
Advance tax instalments fall in June, September, December and March if your Indian tax liability exceeds ₹10,000 after TDS. The ITR filing deadline for NRIs with India-source income is typically 31 July, extended to 31 October if accounts need audit. TDS refunds only arrive after an ITR is filed — a missed deadline means waiting another year.
Banking and investment dates
NRE and NRO fixed deposits auto-renew at the prevailing rate unless you give a maturity instruction. FD maturity, SIP mandate debit dates, home loan EMI due dates, and insurance premium renewal dates all benefit from a 30-day advance reminder rather than a day-of alert.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I check passport expiry?
Check at least 9 to 12 months before expiry. Many residence permit renewals and re-entry requirements require a minimum of 6 months remaining validity on the passport itself, and processing times for Indian passports from abroad can run 8 to 16 weeks depending on the consulate. Applying early avoids a gap between passport and permit validity.
What is the ITR filing deadline for NRIs?
The standard deadline for NRIs with India-source income is 31 July of the assessment year, which covers income earned in the previous financial year ending 31 March. If your Indian accounts require an audit, the extended deadline is 31 October. Filing by the standard deadline avoids an interest charge on any outstanding tax liability.
Do FDs auto-renew if I forget the maturity date?
Yes. Most Indian banks automatically renew NRE and NRO fixed deposits for the same original tenure at the prevailing interest rate on maturity day if no instruction is received. If rates have changed or you intended to withdraw the funds, an auto-renewed FD locks your money for another full tenure and breaking it early usually costs one to two quarters of interest.
